They don't! In fact, some cultures even ban men from birthing rooms...but it's natural to want your loved one to be by your side when your are anxious and in great pain. Besides, as a husband. you were certainly by your lady's side when the baby was conceived (I hope), so why not be there as well when the baby is born?
But mostly, it's not the ladies need their husbands, it's that the husbands need their ladies. Otherwise husbands are sitting outside wondering what's going on. When they're with their ladies, they can pretend that they're sharing the load (they're not).
